MAX MSP and NATO.0+55

lector: Jeremy Schaller (NEW YORK)
Drawing boxes. Connecting Lines. Flow control. The signals pass from object to object to generate a patch, messages are exchanged within it. These are the inherent attributes of MaxMSP and PD, and by extension Nato, Jitter, SoftVNS and Gem. In a sense the software mirrors the hardware, where diagrams represent relations between packages of code. They are drawn out. This will be an introductory journey on this conceptual terrain. It is recommended to work through the tutorials of MaxMSP to grasp the initial logic to the communication flow - objects speak to others in certain ways, not mathematically necessarily but with a certain grammar. Just like text, code or pictures, constellations in patches can be copy-pasted and modified, creating dialogue.

"The aim of every artist is to arrest motion, which is life, by artificial means and hold it fixed so that a hundred years later, when a stranger looks at it, it moves again since it is life.... This is the artist's way of scribbling 'Kilroy was here' on the wall of the final and irrevocable oblivion through which he must someday pass.
William Faulkner, Interview with Paris Review, 1956.
All cities are geological; you cannot take three steps without encountering ghosts bearing all the prestige of their legends. We move within a closed landscape whose landmarks constantly draw us toward the past. Certain shifting angles, certain receding perspectives, allow us to glimpse original conceptions of space, but this vision remains fragmentary. It must be sought in the magical locales of fairy tales and surrealist writings: castles, endless walls, little forgotten bars, mammoth caverns, casino mirrors.
Ivan Chtcheglov

The student is a stoic slave: the more chains authority heaps upon him, the freer he is in phantasy. He shares with his new family, the University, a belief in a curious kind of autonomy. Real independence, apparently, lies in a direct subservience to the two most powerful systems of social control: the family and the State. He is their well-behaved and grateful child, and like the submissive child he is overeager to please. He celebrates all the values and mystifications of the system, devouring them with all the anxiety of the infant at the breast. Once, the old illusions had to be imposed on an aristocracy of labour; the petits cadres-to-be ingest them willingly under the guise of culture.
U.N.E.F. Strasbourg, 1966

INFO

Mobile pilot project „deCarto-graphy“ is a challenge for engaged students and becomming and former students from different schools of humanities, from technical and art disciplines, preferable for those who are trying to find out how to contribute towards transition of the current established educational system, stereotypes and customs of academic education and are trying to approach more open concept of education and self education. Occassion appears for establishing an immediate and experiemental open moving body – students agora which would be based on antiautoriarian and non hierachic ideas and grounds and on values of collaboration and mutual shared resources and experiences. To discuss this issues is possible during the 10-days-gathering-workshop in June, when groups and individuals are engaged in travelling and mapping of certains fenomena and epiphenomena in certain areas and layers of reality, to document data, narratives, objects they encounered and found in town, landscape and its peripheries..in form of text, video, audio, intervence, performance.. assembalges etc.
results will be gathered-collected-uploaded–disctributed and recycled on public space and internet in the places of the mapping after the ending of the project.

19.00 SOCIAL IMPACT-Social Impact, founded in 1997, deals primarily with areas of social tensions and the socio-political conflicts behind them. The most recent projects addresses the spatial, social and economic frames of action of marginal groups.
The working methods are derived from art and action research. We distinguish projects with sociological parts and interactions and research. To illustrate the different approaches and methods I will talk about the following projects: "On the Situation of Illegal Alien Cleaning Women” included a sociological research and the publication and distribution of a multilingual "survival guide" (access to medical help, care facilities, protection from trafficking, ...)
"Dead_House_Walking" was based on the preparation of remembrance-photos for the residents and setting up a communication exchange, to enable the residents to better represent their interests to the owners of the building.
“border rescue” uses activism to bring the increasing numbers of death at the european borders into the public. Downloadables Routeguides of immigration routes are used as a tool to create attention for the problem.
Furhter I will talk about the work in progress:
“On the Situation of Sex-Workers at the Austrian-Czech Border”
“Moving-Truck Cinema / Jezevo Motel”
“Agency NO MILK NO HONEY”
And some sentences about our concept of mediation "expansive audience”. Social Impact always tries to communicate with the three different audience groups that are to be distinguished: the participants, the casual audience - which comes into contact with the art work or art process more or less by chance - and the art scene itself.
